Tulipa sylvestris - Bostulp
.
Common name: Bostulp
Family: Liliaceae (Leliefamilie)
Distribution: Europe to NW China, N Africa
Regional red list: Vulnerable
Comments: The forest tulip is the only tulip you can find in the wild in the Netherlands. It's actually a so-called "stinzenplant", brought from south-eastern Europe in the 17th or 18th century and planted at Frisian farms and country estates. From there it became naturalised. It makes underground offshoots with another bulb at the end. Apart from the yellow colour of its petals, the wood tulip is distinguished from other tulips by the hairiness at the base of the, also yellow, stamens.
