sativus
Common name:
Saffraankrokus, Saffron crocus
Family:
Iridaceae (Irisfamilie)
Synonym:
Crocus
autumnalis
Distribution:

Comments:
Characteristic for this species are the red styles and stigmas: the expensive herb saffron. This triploid (three sets of chromosomes instead of two) crocus that is not known from the wild is a very old cultural crop from the Middle East and was already used by the Romans, amongst others against hangovers.
